apodization

The use over a telescope aperture of a screen that progressively reduces, from the centre to the edge of the aperture, the amount of light transmitted down the instrument. The purpose is to reduce diffraction effects that tend to blur fine detail in images of the planets. A practical apodizing screen consists of three or four ring-shaped zones.
